Peotone: The Collections
The Vern and Paul Geiss Collection
An exceptional assemblage of artifacts!
Of particular note are the first two points in row 1: Hardaway points are rare even in their locus of origin, the Piedmont of North Carolina. These points date to the Transitional Paleo-Period in North Carolina and immediate surrounding states. Their being found in Illinois is unusual, and may suggest the typology’s technological attributes were spread to other peoples, rather than the originating population itself migrating to other regions.

With the exception of the first two points in the second row, all projectile points shown were made during the Early Archaic Period. The three drill-fragments are typical forms dating to the Early Archaic Period as well, and indicate of non-lithics related tasks performed by their makers. More specifically, drills were not used to bore holes in stone, but to perforate wood, bone/horn, and leather.
