This frame of artifacts exhibits forms dating from the Early Archaic
through the Woodland Periods. It may be noted that there is a predominantly
greater number of basal portions than tips exhibited in these collections—this
is due to the fact that, as points and blades are hafted, in the event
of breakage, the hafted portion returns to the maker’s camp, while the
tips of such points and tools usually remain where lost or broken. This
may be especially true of damage resulting of impact-fractures when a point
hits bone/s within a game-animal’s body—the point may well remain with
the discarded portions of the carcass, while the shaft and basal portion
of the point are returned to camp. |
