The Nieland Collection
Several years ago this area had a drought and Carl Nieland, Fire Chief in Monee, Illinois, decided to take a walk in a dry little creek bed and this is what he stumbled across. The first artifact is a shaft sander, made from course, abrasive stone. John Duncan and Robert Peterson have both given me a lesson concerning this artifact as it was the first one I have seen. These were used to make the shafts of lances and arrows smooth.

We now have another rock with a hole in it and none of us know what they are. We do know that they are found in the archaeological sites and they do not seem like natural formations. Some of the rocks have two to three holes of similar size and are rather on the large size. In other words, they are too large to hold in your hand. If anyone would happen to know what these items are please feel free to let us know….we’re stumped!

Since finding out he really did have at least one artifact here, Carl has decided to do some more looking in the general area. Good Luck Carl and thank you for sharing. I personally hope you come across some points in the same vicinity of these finds as that would help in dating the site.
