In the top row we have a Dalton Greenbrier which dates from 8500 to 7900
B.C. according to my resource books. We then go to two beautifully
pressure-flaked points that are not known in this area and they remain
unnamed for the time being. The large Hardin in the center is practically
perfect and dates about 8000-5000 B.C. Another Hardin follows along
with a partial drill that was originally a Hardin.
The first artifact in the second row, though missing some parts, is
surely another Hardin due to the workmanship and the shape of the barbs.
The next four all fall into the Thebes Cluster.
The first three artifacts in the bottom row are Dovetails, which fall
into the Thebes Cluster. The last two points at first seem to be a form
of a Dovetail but I am not so sure as they both have a squared-off basal
treatment so I think it best to leave them without a name for the time
being.
They are both super-thin and exhibit fine flaking but that basal treatment
doesn’t say “Dove” to me, just isn’t quite right in my book. Maybe they
are Thebes on the way to becoming Dovetails or are an entirely different
type. We will just have to wait and see if we find any more of these beautifully
made artifacts in other collections…..and then it will most likely still
remain a mystery to be solved.
