Peotone: The Collections
The Willard Pauling Collection
The first item pictured at the top left is a well-used hammer stone. To the right is a metate, or grinding/abrading stone. Right below this artifact is a war club. It may be difficult to see from the scan but it is hafted and shows no battering on the ends, as would a hammer stone. Stone informed me that it was originally covered in hide.

The remaining artifacts simply cannot be named. I believe the first artifact pictured in the second row is a top to a left-hand beveled Thebes but we’ll never know unless someone finds the base. My best guess for the following artifact is a Kirk.

As for the remaining artifacts…..you take a guess. We do have another little side-notched Early Archaic point that is pictured second in the bottom row. The base is heavily ground and these are the artifacts we are seeing in this area that to date have not been named.

I would like to personally thank Mr. Pauling for sharing with everyone and he now has all these artifacts in frames for display……except the three big ones……they didn’t fit!
As you can see, Mr. Pauling has a collection that spans time from Paleo-Indian to Historical, as do many of the collections found in this area. Enjoy.
