2 views of a very thick quartzite tool? found in drainage ditch of
a dirt road.
Face A (left pic, “flat bottom”) - At
first glance this tool appears to be uniface, but closer
inspection reveals coarse flaking in
the stem area and very fine “flat” flaking from the sides.
The fine flake scars are not at all
visible at all scans.
Face B (right pic, “top face”) - This
face also exhibits fine edge flaking with both sides beveled
approx. 40 degrees with a tip slope
approx. 30 degrees.
Stem - The base and “corner notches”
are heavily ground.
Purpose - What specialized function
did this tool serve? The edge work is much finer than
the typical scraper; indeed it is much
finer than most points. The edges have no obvious wear.
