CONTEXT of following artifacts:
Six sites traversed by 1.3 miles of a recently widened dirt road
parallel to the Conecuh River in central Covington County, Alabama.
This road section is typically 600 feet off the river centerline and
the site altitudes range from 30 to 80 feet above the riverbed.
All sites are adjacent to small springs or creeks that feed the river.
Acres of topsoil (and artifacts) have been removed by the road
cuts
through the two high elevation sites and used to fill the road bed
across the creeks. All items are quartzite (what else is there?)
and
were collected in mid January 2001. The quartzite source was
the
riverbed. Pottery shards were found at only one of the six sites.

My first and only platform abrading stone. It is coarse grained quartzite
and has a shallow “V” cross section that fits comfortably in the hand.
The reddish hue was imparted by the red clay soil in which it was found. |
