The Dirt
The Anonymous James works the clay layer
of a large trench he and Paul worked on.
They are working the wall downward to get to the paleo layer.
Above them is throwback from up to 10 years ago.
You can see an ashy-looking layer of lime percolate above the red layer.
This is all along the eroded ravine. Last years' flooding opened up
the wall.
Two pictures of the wall in Bob's hole. The top shot
is of the emerging midden where the fine translucent flint
and the Perds and Castrovilles Bob's found over the last
few months. The bottom of the shot shows the red clay layer the paleo
artifacts are coming out of. Top shot is about 4 feet below surface
to near 6 feet.
The bottom picture shows the snails in the top layer.
The soil here is very, very compacted.
