Here we see Peter Twohey, our host at this old mill in Hampshire, UK. Peter grew up working here... started as a kid. Here he is in from of the main gear wheel. Peter personally handmade many of the gears' cogs. There's 3 kinds of wood used depending on which gear it's to be used on and they do wear out regularly. Behind the gear, in the other room behind the gear, is the huge water wheel which turns the whole machine. This mill has a long history, being in nearly constant use since the 10th century! The gearing runs throughout the mill, on 2 floors. When it's cranked up the whole building vibrates and hums... it passes through your body. |
