The black square on the barn is our datum point, used to measure
elevation or depth. Keeping one point as a constant depth enables a researcher
to keep depth measurements consistent over a large area. There will be
many pits dug, and the depths of each find recorded.. This starts to make
sense as one digs and realizes the land slopes subtly even over a short
distance. Remember, formal digging is about recording the physical location
of what is found to as great an accuracy as possible--- these measurements
prove the associations of things useful later when the researcher looks
for conclusions to draw about the excavation. (More about this, shortly!)
