The shallow nature of this hearth is seen here--- lots of snails showing up, and soil below the rocks. One of the things we noticed as we entered into the 4th level was that the snails got noticeably smaller, almost half the size of snails in the layer above. The snails were copious, though in slightly smaller numbers than in level 3. Could this be an indicator of environmental change?.... perhaps bad weather that year? |
