Alibates Materials Traded from the Panhandle

Alibates chert, widely used on the Southern Plains, is found primarily along the Canadian River Breaks in the Panhandle. Numbers of biface caches or storage areas and huge quantities of stone-working debris have been found in this area, indicating that Panhandle groups were actively engaged in mining, knapping and trading the material. alibates tools found at Pecos Pueblo in present-day New Mexico indicate this trade lasted until the 15th century.
